By: Alison Wahlberg Spotlight: Taylor Gery Taylor Gery, 17, was selected for the 2021 session of Governor’s School East as the only person from her school district. Taylor attends Rosewood High School in Goldsboro, North Carolina, which has a student population of approximately 500, and is an active member of her community. She was selected in the English discipline and is in the Memoir section at GSE. Taylor has always loved to write, even from a young age. She says that “Writing is one of my greatest passions. I believe that words are extremely powerful, especially when used to tell a story, either fictional or veridical.” One of her favorite books is Wonder by R.J. Palacio. “I volunteer at The Bridge Church. I have served in BridgeKids, the children’s ministry program, for the past six years. Two years ago, I became the kindergarten and first grade teacher. I lead my kindergarten and first grade class on a weekly basis. Each week, I teach a lesson that incorporates interactive activities for them to participate in. BridgeKids is something that I am deeply passionate about. My kindergarten and first graders have taught me a lot about myself and bring so much joy to my life,” Taylor says. Apart from being an involved member of her church, Taylor works at her family’s restaurant, Quiznos, located in Goldsboro. She works around 20 hours a week as a shift lead and fondly remembers a time when one of her coworkers lost a pair of tongs to the industrial-sized oven. Taylor also plays soccer for both a club team, Wayne County United, as a centerback, and for her school team as a center mid. She has been playing soccer since she was four years old, after her dad, a club and high school soccer player himself, introduced her to the sport. In 2021, Taylor made the all-region girls soccer team and was the second leading goal scorer for Rosewood. One of Taylor’s most interesting stories about her high school was when Rosewood placed a fake leg on Princeton’s football field, turning the ‘P’ in Princeton into an R. Taylor hopes to one day become a pediatric physical therapist and continue changing the world through her children. Hometown Spotlight: Goldsboro, NC Population as of 2021: 37, 639 Fun Facts:
