By: Izabella Counts Last Wednesday marked the beginning of the 41st year of Governor’s School Poetry Readings. This tradition was founded by and has grown with Chuck Sullivan, a basketball coach, published poet, and English instructor at GSE. His work includes books such as Alphabet of Grace and Zen Matchbox, and despite a prolific history of personal poetry readings dedicated to books such as the aforementioned titles, Chuck stood aside Wednesday. He organizes these readings to give a voice to students and staff alike, emphasizing the students’ ability to create poetry regardless of experience or past publications. Within the walls of Kresge auditorium, students shared poetry that highlighted the diversity of art at Governor’s School East. Those listening would have heard poems about the joy and beauty of nature, as well as laments for hope, isolation, and balance. One student even shared an animated recitation of a poem by Linda Gregorson, reminding us that all forms of poetry recitation are welcome at these readings. But participation was not limited to the students: two TACs, Marilla and Kirby, shared their poems with us. From them, we learned of memory and inspiration, and the peace found in Eve’s Garden. In the parting words of Chuck Sullivan, “It was a marvelous beginning.”
While this first reading was held at 6:00 PM in the Cate Student Center, its organizers hope to be outdoors for the next meeting with the company of chirping birds, itchy grass and a bright blue sky. To quote Walt Whitman, as Chuck did during the reading, “Great poets need great audiences.” Therefore participation, recitation, and, of course, audience appreciation are all equally encouraged next Wednesday at 6pm.
