By: Katrina Hu Why are people who wear sunscreen more likely to develop skin cancer than those who don’t? How do you tell the difference between two magnetic and nonmagnetic, but otherwise identical, pieces of iron? Students were asked to solve problems like these in the Natural Science Challenge over the past two weeks. The event is hosted by natural science instructor Philip Boyne, and challenges give students from all areas the opportunity to test their general science intuition. Congratulations to the winners of the Natural Science Challenge Week One!
If I’m being entirely honest, as a natural science student, it’s a bit embarrassing when none of the winners of the Natural Science Challenge are in Natural Science. But, when I consider it again, is it? As humans, to make things easier on our brains, we like to sort people into categories when we first meet them. For me at least, this has been especially true as I’ve been bombarded with new faces and names the past week. As a means of just trying to get everyone straight in my memory, I’ve created mental profiles for everyone: “Ellie -- English”, “Catherine -- Dance”, “Sarah -- Natural Science…” However, through this Challenge and through every individual I’ve gotten to know, I've come to see just how oversimplified these mental profiles are. Each individual at Governor’s School is multifaceted and can excel at disciplines outside of their chosen Area I. For instance, I have a friend in instrumental music who is absolutely phenomenal at math and dance. Abe, a natural science TAC, won the social science challenge when he was at Governor's School. As we move through the next few weeks, we should keep in mind that we might see great improv from a math kid, discuss political theory with someone from choral music, or even have a non-natural science kid win the natural science challenge. Congratulations again to all of our week one winners! Comments are closed.
